New York Bike Style
In 2014, I authored and photographed a monograph comprising street style portraits of NYC cyclists, featuring an interview with David Byrne and a foreword by Casey Neistat, published by international imprint Prestel. I wanted to make bicycling look as good as it feels, with the underlying goal of encouraging more people to give it a go. I launched a corresponding blog and Instagram account under the moniker “Preferred Mode.”
Altogether, the project has garnered a fair amount of press. Vanity Fair (Spain) called me “The Sartorialist on two wheels” and Esquire called me “a stylish man,” which I really don’t think is accurate, but that’s what Esquire said, so who am I to argue. In 2019, the Museum of the City of New York featured a few dozen photographs from the project in their “Cycling in the City: A 200-Year History” exhibition.
I still occasionally like to ride around, flag people down, and get them to pose and talk to me.
