I took these photos at dance/performance collective Launch Movement Experiment’s “re:arrangement,” a dance performance improvisation. Not a single element was scripted, including lights and sound. I was invited to shoot the dress rehearsal and told that I could get as close to the action onstage as I wanted. It was a unique shooting environment (and a challenging one; as you’ll see, sometimes flashlights or slide projectors were the only light sources), where I felt like I was a part of the performance. Occasionally I even felt as if the dancers and lighting designer were responding to my movements and shutter clicks as I slunk around the stage, trying to capture the right silhouette, lens flare or dance movement.
